Heat Pump Installation

Frequently Asked Questions

What heat pumps do we install?

There are two types of heat pumps – air source heat pumps and ground source heat pumps. We mostly install air source heat pumps. Generally, you’ll find that air source heat pumps are the more popular of the two types of pumps and are easier to install due to smaller space requirements and less excavation work. We often find ourselves installing ground source in commercial applications like schools and leisure centres. Air source heat pumps suit the majority of residential properties.

Is my home suitable for a heat pump installation?

During our surveying process, we’ll assess your home to see whether it is suitable for heat pump installation. We’ve found that heat pumps can be installed in almost any home; however, there are a number of considerations that will allow a heat pump to work at its best. Most commonly, we would advise that your house has full insulation to prevent as much heat from escaping as possible. You’ll also need to consider the location of the heat pump. They are placed outside and so we’ll need to find a suitable location for the unit. We will also need to consider elements such as compatibility with your current heating system.

Can I get a grant for a heat pump?

There is financial help available from the government to help you with the cost of heat pump installation. The Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (Domestic RHI) is an incentive introduced by the government to promote the use of renewable energy sources to power the home. Households can receive up to £11,500 by fitting an air source heat pump, until the incentive ends in April 2022. The payments depend on the amount of clean, green renewable heat it’s estimated their system produces.

The government is also introducing a new boiler replacement scheme which is due to replace the Renewable Heat Incentive in April 2022. UK households will be offered up-front subsidies of £5,000 towards making the switch from gas boilers to heat pumps.

Does a heat pump replace a boiler?

Yes, air source heat pumps provide both the heating and hot water you need for your home. Gas boilers are slowly being replaced by heat pumps and will be phased out entirely by 2030. In fact, in most new builds, heat pumps are the preferred energy source.

How long do heat pumps take to install?

It could take between a week and 10 days to install an air source heat pump, however, the time taken depends on the amount of preparation work needed prior to installation. Most are completed in 3 – 4 days tops. Installation time can vary depending upon the size of the heat pump, the plumbing work needed, the electricity supply/wiring and other factors that may influence installation time such as access issues.

What is the cost of heat pump installation?

It is difficult to give a flat price for an air source heat pump installation as there are a number of factors that can affect the time of the installation. A more difficult job leads to additional time requirements. On average, the cost of heat pump installation starts from £10,000, however, there are a number of incentives available that can offset or even cover the cost of installation completely.
